145. The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper. "Too much emphasis is placed on the development of reading skills in elementary school. Many students who are discouraged by the lonely activity of reading turn away from schoolwork merely because they are poor readers. But books on audiocassette tape provide an important alternative for students at this crucial slage in their education, one the school board should not reject merely because of the expense involved. After all, many studies attest to the value of allowing students to hear books read aloud; there is even edidence that students whose parents read to them are even more likely to become able readers. Thus, hearing books on tape can only make students more eager to read and to learn. Therefore, the school board should encourage schools to buy books on tape and to use them in elementary education."

In this argument the author asserted that school should but books on tape an use them to improve students' abilities of reading. To justify this conclusion, several evidence are used in the statement. First, many students are pooe readers instead of disliking schoolwork. Second, books on tape can eliminate this situation and improve students' reading ability. After my analysis, however, there are several fallacies existed.

42. Because learning is not a solitary acitivity but one that requires collaboration among people, students of all ages will benefit academically if they work frequently in qroups.

People have debate over the way of learning for many years. Some thought learning is an individual-related thing; others, group-related ones. It is not appropriate to assert the definition of learning belongs to solitary acitivity or collaboration. Hence, I strongly disgree with the author on his/her point of view.

222. The purpose of education should be to create an academic environment that is seperate from the outside world. This kind of environment is ideal because it allows students to focus on important ideas without being held back by pratical concerns.

There has been a debate over whether job-related courses or non-job-related ones are needed in unversities or colleges for many years and the purpose of education has also encountered controversy from different point of views. I do not agree with the author on creating an academic environment without being interfered by outside world; instead, creating this kind of environment and keeping up with outside world are equally siginificant.

204. The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a farming publication. "With continuing publicity about the need for healthful diets, and with new research about the harmful effects of eating too much sugar, nationwide demand for sugar will no doubt decline. Therefore, farmers in our state should use the land on which they currently grow cane to grow peanuts, a food that is rich in protein and low in sugar. Farmers in the neighboring country of Palin greatly increase their production peanuts last year, and their total revenues from that crop were quite high."

The author asserted that farmers in outr states should cultivate peanuts instead of sugars by using several evidence to support his/her view -- reports about harmful effects of eating too much sugar resulting to declination of demand of sugar, low protein contained in sugar and increasing production of peanuts in neighboring country. However, there are some fallacies in this argument after I analyze it and I will state each of them in the following statement.

222. Learning for learning's sake is an outdated concept. Today, education must serve an ulterior purpose and be directed toward clear goals.

Competition is essential to our society, our country and the whole world; Learning, also critical to our students, our parents and all the people. Taditionally, parents had a concept that we should study very hard and get higher scores by our own under any possible circumstances, because in their mind, higher grades means the possibility of getting higher salaries was greater than lower ones. However, does scores really represent the development of a person in the future?

34"Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society."

It seems nowadays that job-related courses are so important to students in colleges that they need only study these courses in order to have a good job with necessary knowledge. Because of this, many universities as well as students put far less energy to those seemingly non-work-related courses. However, as far as I am concerned, other courses, such as arts, humanities, and some biological sciences are as important as those practically job-related ones.

It is true that job-related courses are crucial to students in that most of them attend to universities seeking for job-related skill which will ensure them get a fine job after graduate. The ultimate goal of education is also to nurture high-qualified people who can fit for related jobs with a wide professional knowledge, so every university should ensure that their students can gain enough required knowledge to better their future life. Equipped with those knowledge, student gain the key to enter the future professional gate which may keep close for those outsiders. After all, it is work-related knowledge that enables students to perform themselves during their future working period: they use their learned job-related knowledge rather than some irrelevant knowledge, say art, to gain higher achievement in their jobs; innovations are always resulted from professional knowledge too. Simply put, when one mastered no job-related knowledge, how could companies employ them for further development?

87. The following appeared in a memo to managers of Christine's, a chain of craft stores. "Several major newspapers have recently run articles noting an increased interest in pottery. The number of potters in this country has risen by eighteen percent in the past five years, and pottery is particularly gaining popularity on college campuses. In order to take advantage of these trends, Christine's should immediately begin carrying a larger volume of pottery supplies. Since several of our stores have recently experienced a decrease in sales of painting supplies, all store managers should reallocate shelf space from the painting area for the display of pottery. Stores should display posters showing pottery that is designed to appeal to college-age individuals. These actions will undoubtedly increase our profits dramatically."
