222. Learning for learning's sake is an outdated concept. Today, education must serve an ulterior purpose and be directed toward clear goals.
Competition is essential to our society, our country and the whole world; Learning, also critical to our students, our parents and all the people. Taditionally, parents had a concept that we should study very hard and get higher scores by our own under any possible circumstances, because in their mind, higher grades means the possibility of getting higher salaries was greater than lower ones. However, does scores really represent the development of a person in the future?
About 50-year old adults or elder -- usually referred to as last generation -- often suffered from depression in the middle of 20th century. By hard-working and industrial-learning, they could grasp the chance to have good jobs or several high-salary works and sustained the operation of their families. Hence, the goal of learning is earning money and many poor people could not resist the fate. No wonder people in that generation advocated that the goal of learning is learning itself as a result that it implied learning is a symbol of affluence, stabliliy and happiness. Nevertheless, it is a misleading slogan and we should refine the defination of learning.
Learning for learning's sake is not only outdated but also tautological. It should be obseleted. Why do people want to learn? For example, Edison was thought as a stupid with lower scores and unfinished homework every week. However, he was not upset and finally developed one of the most important invention in the world -- eletric bulbs. Before creating electric bulb, he read many kind of book from physics to electrics. Edison did not learn for learning's sake, and he learn for his interest, for feedback to society instead. Accordingly, since Edison, a well-known and undoubted celebrity, clearly had a goal doing learning, we mediocre person must catch up with them and find the goals for ourselves.
Moreover, education is an significant process when the government wants to cultivate these pillars of the country in the future. The purpose of education should let students to discover what field of study they are interested in and let them develop themselves on their own. Clearer goals a student has, more possible he/she will not encounter many obstacle in his/her learning. In other words, we learn for ourselves, not for learning, because learning is a process, not a goal, and we can't define it to be our target of learning.
In sum, learning for learning's sake should be refined to learning for our interests' or habits' sake. Students must direct towards their targets with clear goals, clear roads, instead of ambiguous and tortuous way.
