222. The purpose of education should be to create an academic environment that is seperate from the outside world. This kind of environment is ideal because it allows students to focus on important ideas without being held back by pratical concerns.
There has been a debate over whether job-related courses or non-job-related ones are needed in unversities or colleges for many years and the purpose of education has also encountered controversy from different point of views. I do not agree with the author on creating an academic environment without being interfered by outside world; instead, creating this kind of environment and keeping up with outside world are equally siginificant.
As we know, a seed needs plenty of factors occured step by step to grow up and become a sound tree; we students also needs absorbing various information, doing research and learning job-related courses or other society-related ones to become a truly citizen. By creating an academic environment, education plays an important role on developing our mind and our soul. For one thing, it is nesscery to prevent students from being contaminated by outside adluterated information -- politicans arguing with each other, someone killing classmates, deceptive call for money, and so forth -- as a result of student not being mature enough to tell good and bad apart; for another, teacher can eliminate many society-related factors and teach students some basic rules to increase their foundamental knowledge without too complicated. Hence, keeping students from outside world improves quality of teaching and students.
On the other hand, take the seed I mentioned in the former paragraph for example. education, as a gardener, carefully give seeds -- students -- water and fertilizer everyday, preparing lots of rescources, hoping that they can become stronger and healthier, and also take care of those offspring -- next generation -- in the same way. Nevertheless, sun, wind, and so on, are also indispensible for seeds to growing up. Without experiencing strong wind, it isn't sufficient to assert the soundness of a tree because this tree may break into pieces someday; without experiencing a heavy rain, it isn't appropriate to say that this tree will not die dut to saturating with too much water. In one word, students must contact with the outside world to fulfill their lives.
When taking management course, our teacher said, "All these rules in the book are not only useful but also meaningless. Why? Ask a sophiscated manager in industry and he/she will tell you how complicated to deal with employees' affair." That is to say, althougth education give us a good environment to learn, to focus on some ideas which may contribute to society a lot, keeping up with outside world at the same time can keep us from both falling behind the trend of economy, technology, etc, and discovering the gap between campuses and society too late. Therefore, education must find the way to balance pure academic environment and the influence of the outside owrld.
In sum, ideal and practical concerns should be combined and developed simultaneously; otherwise, students will suffer from lacking in knowledge or not being used to outside world after graduating.
