87. The following appeared in a memo to managers of Christine's, a chain of craft stores. "Several major newspapers have recently run articles noting an increased interest in pottery. The number of potters in this country has risen by eighteen percent in the past five years, and pottery is particularly gaining popularity on college campuses. In order to take advantage of these trends, Christine's should immediately begin carrying a larger volume of pottery supplies. Since several of our stores have recently experienced a decrease in sales of painting supplies, all store managers should reallocate shelf space from the painting area for the display of pottery. Stores should display posters showing pottery that is designed to appeal to college-age individuals. These actions will undoubtedly increase our profits dramatically."

According to the statement, the author asserted that Christine should increase the display of pottery to earn more money than before by using several reasons: increasing of the number if potters in the past five years, pottery's popularity on colleage campuses, decreasing of painting supplies. It seems the conclusion is right without reading carefully. there exists some fallacies and I will focus on these parts in the following analysis.

In the first place, the author fails to gather full statistics of potters in the past five years. Even if the number of potters in the country has risen by 18 percent in the past five years, it does not mean that the growth rate of the number of potters is still high enough recently for managers to consider investing in. For example, the growth rate of the number of potter may risen only 1 percent in the last year and the market share of Christine may be in constancy without flucuation. Therefore, investing in potters will not earn more money than they expected before.

Moreover, despite of pottery being prevalent on college campuses, it is not reasonable to relate this issue to gaining profits. Maybe students like potters, however, just appreciate them without having any motivation buying them. In addition, managers of Christine must determine the percentage of incomes from selling potters to people on college campuses, otherwise they will get a frustrating report of earning if the percentage of total income from college is only below 5 percent.

Last but not the least, the author also makes some mistakes when establishing relationship between decreasing in sales of painting and reallocating shelf spaces from the painting area for the diaplay of pottery. The former sentence can absolutely infer the second sentence's reasonableness. This trend may become out-dated several days or one month later, or the decreaing in sales of painting is just temporary because it is effected by the sales of sculpture, calligraphy, or any other else.

To sum up, managers of Christine should take several factors into account and use some statictics to complement the fallacies, making this statement more persuasive.
