129. In this argument, the author concluded that Sherwood hospital should alien with Sherwood
Animal Shelter to recover the patients with heart disease and decrease cost of patients needing
ongoing treatment. To justify the conclusion, the author gave the evidences that pet owners
had longer lives and the publicity of the 'adopt-a-dog' program would reduce the risk of heart
desease. However, this argument suffered from several critical fallacies.
In the first place, the author fails to establish the relationship between adopting dogs and low
heart disease rate. Althougth the recent study showed that pet owners had longer and healthier
lives on average, it did not mean everyone is suitable to raise dogs. Besides, the reason that dog
owners had lower inceidence of heart disease may result from other factors, such as most of them
exercising everyday. Hence, it is not appropriate to abruptly advocate this program for lack of
further evidences.
Another flaw in this argument is that this medical cost may not decrease due to some reasons:
patients expectedly recovered from heart disease and decrease their times doing ongoing
treatment, however, they were contaminated by several bacteria or virus and fell ill if dogs did
not carefully washed before. As a result, medical cost increased instead of declining. Therefore,
the author must specify the background of Sherwood Animal Shelter and asscertain whether its
reputation is good or not.
Last but not the least, the publicity about the program would not really attract more people to
adopt pets and reduce the risk of heart disease. While turning on the television, many
advertisement and publicity were full of the screen continuously and neglected by people easily
on condition that they could not remember all the things they saw, or just had a glance. In
addition, it is difficult to estimate the influence of the publicity without giving sufficient
information in society.
Consquently, this argument lacks credibility in the evidences which the author used to support
his/her view. To make the augument more convincible, the author should search as much as
information as he/she can to complement the fallacies mentioned above.
